Moses Shaw (1767) and the Shaw's of Cambridgeshire

Chief of a noted gypsy family from Cambridgeshire.

ARON SHAW's PARENTS

Aron died in 1841, leaving Sarah a young widow.  His death certificate shows he was 34 years old at the time he was killed.  This is also evidenced by the Caddington Parish burial records showing Aron, aged 34, being buried in Caddington five days after his death.

I found his birth in The Caddington Parish records on 13th November 1808, with parents being John Shaw and Sarah.  Obviously being pre-1837, records now become more circumstantial, but, having said that, others have found that Aron's parents were John (born 1765 in Gamblingay, Bedfordshire), a sieve bottomer, and Sarah Dover.  This couple married, according to the Stotfold Parish Records, on 1st November 1790, and went on to have a number of children in Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire fitting in with their gypsy background.

ARON SHAW's GRANDPARENTS

There is further unsubstantiated evidence that John Shaw's parents might have been Moses and Susannah, mentioned in an excellent article about Cambridgeshire's gypsies called "Cinderella".1  The Gamlingay birth records have John Shaw "son of Moses & Susan travellers the woman delivered of her child in Thomas Main barn" in 1765.  There was a Thomas Main living in Gamlingay at this time who may be the person referred to.

The working theory, still to be fully researched, is that Moses and Susannah had a number of children, including John and another Moses, who was married to Jemima.

The historian, George Nathan Maynard, wrote about this Moses and the Shaw family from Cambridgeshire in the 1860's.
